Not only are the fruit used for a range of cooking purposes, but the leaves of the tree have also been used for basket weaving. Dates possess a very high sugar content with the economic importance of date palm. According to a study, dates are a low glycemic indicator food that does not result in significant increases in blood sugar in people with or without diabetes.

Dates have won a unique place in the Muslim faith. During the month of Ramadan, it is customary that the Muslims break their fast by having dates following the Quran.
